Tips for great avatars

  1. Center the face before cropping, with a little space above the head.
  2. Plain backgrounds keep the focus on the person.
  3. Consistent style: use the same size and border for every team member.
  4. Good light: brighten dark photos first with the Photo Editor.

Crop to frame the face first, add a square border, or resize for the platform.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the result a PNG?

Only PNG (and WebP) can store the transparent corners around the circle. A JPG would fill them with a solid color.

Which part of the photo is used?

The largest centered square. If your subject isn't centered, crop the photo first with the Crop Image tool using the 1:1 ratio, then make it round.

What size should a profile picture be?

Most platforms display avatars small but accept larger uploads: 400–800 px is a safe choice. Many sites crop to a circle automatically, but a pre-cropped circle works well for slides, emails and websites.

Can I add a colored ring around the photo?

Yes. Set a border width and pick a color, such as gold for a highlight ring.

Are my images uploaded?

Most image tools run in your browser. Only Word→JPG, JPG→Word and JPG→HEIC send the file to our server, where it is processed and deleted right away.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Drop multiple files and download them one by one or as a ZIP.

Will converting reduce quality?

Lossless formats like PNG keep full quality. For JPG and WebP you can pick the quality level yourself.
