Frequently asked questions

How are calories burned calculated?

Calories = MET × body weight in kg × hours. A MET (metabolic equivalent) compares an activity's energy use with sitting quietly: running at 6 mph is about 9.8 METs, nearly ten times the energy of rest.

Why does my fitness tracker show a different number?

Trackers use heart rate and movement, and their estimates can differ from MET-based ones by 10–30%. Both are estimates; use either consistently to track trends.

Do heavier people burn more calories?

Yes. Moving a heavier body takes more energy, so the same activity burns more calories for a heavier person.

Does the calculation include my resting calories?

Yes, MET values include the energy you'd use at rest during that time. For the extra calories from exercise alone, subtract about 1 MET.

Are these calculators medical advice?

No. They give general estimates based on established formulas. Talk to a doctor, registered dietitian or qualified coach about your own health, diet or training.

Is my health information stored?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.

Can I use pounds and feet?

Yes. The calculators that need height or weight let you switch between metric (cm, kg) and imperial (ft, in, lb) units.
