Scan QR codes without an app

Got a QR code in an email, a PDF, a screenshot or on a laptop screen? Phone cameras can't scan a code that's on the same phone. This scanner reads QR codes from images and screenshots as well as your camera, right in the browser.

Scanning tips

  1. Crop tight: if a photo contains several codes or lots of background, crop to the one you need.
  2. Avoid glare on glossy surfaces and screens.
  3. Quiet zone: codes need a clear margin around them; don't crop right to the edge.
  4. Low light: increase screen brightness or move to a brighter spot.

Recover a Wi-Fi password

Scanning a Wi-Fi QR code (for example from a router sticker or a friend's phone) shows the network name and password in plain text, so you can connect a laptop or smart TV that has no camera.

Create your own codes with the Wi-Fi QR Code Generator, URL QR Code Generator or vCard QR Code Generator.

How to use the QR Code Scanner

Frequently asked questions

How do I scan a QR code from a screenshot?

Choose Upload image and select the screenshot, or simply press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac) on this page to paste it. The code is decoded instantly.

Why can't the camera find the code?

Make sure the whole code is in view, well lit and in focus, and hold the camera 10–30 cm away. Very small or damaged codes may need a closer, sharper photo.

Is it safe to open links from QR codes?

Treat them like links in an email: check the address before opening. Scammers sometimes place fake QR codes on parking meters and posters. The scanner shows the full link first so you can decide.

Is my camera image uploaded?

No. Frames from your camera and uploaded images are decoded entirely in your browser, and nothing is stored or sent anywhere.

Do the QR codes expire?

No. They are static QR codes with the data encoded directly, so they work forever.

Can I use them commercially?

Yes. The QR codes you generate are yours to use anywhere, including in print.
