Mean, median, mode and more
Paste a list of numbers to instantly see the average and the other summary statistics that describe your data, including test scores, prices, measurements, survey answers or sales figures.
Definitions
| Statistic | Meaning | Example (2, 3, 3, 5, 7) |
|---|---|---|
| Mean | Sum ÷ count | 20 ÷ 5 = 4 |
| Median | Middle value when sorted | 3 |
| Mode | Most frequent value | 3 |
| Range | Maximum − minimum | 7 − 2 = 5 |
| Geometric mean | nth root of the product | ≈ 3.66 |
With an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle values: the median of 1, 2, 3, 4 is 2.5.
Which "average" should I use?
- Mean: symmetric data without extreme outliers (heights, test scores).
- Median: skewed data or outliers (house prices, incomes, response times).
- Mode: categories or the most common value (shoe sizes, survey choices).
- Geometric mean: multiplicative growth (average annual return).
Example: the outlier effect
Salaries of 40k, 42k, 45k, 47k and 300k:
- Mean = 94.8k, pulled up by one high earner.
- Median = 45k, much closer to a typical salary.
