Frequently asked questions

Why are GIFs so large?

GIF is a 1980s format that stores each frame almost like a separate image with only 256 colors. A few seconds of video can easily become several megabytes. Keep clips short and narrow to keep them small.

How do you keep the colors good with only 256?

The tool first analyses the clip to build the best 256-color palette for it, then maps every frame to that palette with dithering, which looks much better than a generic palette.

What settings should I use for sharing?

For chats and social media, 480 px wide at 12 frames per second, for 2–6 seconds, is a good balance of quality and size.

Should I use GIF or a short video?

Most apps also accept short MP4 clips, which are far smaller and sharper. Use GIF when you need something that plays automatically everywhere, such as in emails, documentation or chats that don't support video.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. Every tool runs in your browser using ffmpeg.wasm and your browser's own recording features. Your files never leave your device, which also means there's no upload wait.

Why does the first conversion take longer?

The first time you use a conversion tool, your browser downloads the media engine (about 9 MB). It's then cached, so later conversions start straight away.

How big can files be?

Up to 1 GB. Processing speed depends on your computer: short clips take seconds, while long HD videos can take several minutes. A desktop browser is faster than a phone.

Is there a watermark or time limit?

No watermarks, no sign-up and no limits on how many files you process.
