Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

Tags added to the end of a URL (such as ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email) that tell analytics tools where a visitor came from. They don't change the page the visitor sees.

Which UTM parameters are required?

utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign should always be set. utm_term and utm_content are optional, for paid keywords and for telling apart different links or ads in the same campaign.

Should UTM values be lowercase?

Yes, ideally. Analytics tools treat 'Facebook' and 'facebook' as different sources, so consistent lowercase values keep reports clean.

Should I use UTM tags on internal links?

No. Tagging links between pages of your own site resets the visitor's original source in analytics. Use UTM tags only on links that bring people to your site from elsewhere.

Do I need to log in to my social accounts?

No. None of these tools connect to your accounts or ask for passwords. They work on the text and numbers you enter, in your browser.

Are the platform limits up to date?

They reflect each platform's published limits as of 2026. Platforms change their rules from time to time, so check the platform if a post is rejected.

Is anything I type saved?

No. Only small conveniences, such as your recently used emoji, are remembered in your own browser.
