  • Simplify any ratio to whole numbers (1920:1080 → 16:9)
  • Works with decimals and three or more terms
  • Solve proportions A:B = C:x for the missing value
  • Decimal form (n : 1) shown
  • Great for screens, recipes, maps and mixtures
  • Instant results

Simplify and solve ratios

Ratios describe how quantities relate: screen aspect ratios, recipe proportions, map scales, paint and fuel mixtures, and gear ratios. This calculator simplifies ratios and solves proportions to find missing values.

Solving proportions

To scale while keeping the same ratio, solve A : B = C : x:

x = B × C ÷ A

Example: a recipe uses 2 cups of flour for 3 eggs. How many eggs for 10 cups? 2 : 3 = 10 : x → x = 3 × 10 ÷ 2 = 15 eggs.

Everyday uses

  • Resizing images without distortion.
  • Scaling recipes up or down.
  • Mixing ratios: two-stroke fuel (50:1), concrete (1:2:3), cleaning solutions.
  • Map scales: 1:50,000 means 1 cm on the map is 500 m on the ground.

Work with fractions in the Fraction Calculator or percentages in the Percentage Calculator.

How to use the Ratio Calculator

Frequently asked questions

How do you simplify a ratio?

Divide every term by their greatest common divisor. 1920:1080 → GCD 120 → 16:9. Decimals are scaled to whole numbers first, so 1.5:2.5 becomes 15:25 and then 3:5.

How do I solve a proportion?

For A:B = C:x, x = B × C ÷ A. For example, 16:9 = 1920:x gives x = 9 × 1920 ÷ 16 = 1080.

Can a ratio have more than two parts?

Yes. Concrete mixes like 1:2:3 (cement:sand:gravel) or 10:20:30 → 1:2:3 are simplified the same way.

What's the difference between a ratio and a fraction?

A ratio compares parts to each other (3:2), while a fraction compares a part to the whole (3/5 of the total).

Are these calculators accurate?

They use standard, published formulas (for example the amortization formula for loans, Mifflin-St Jeor for calories and the U.S. Navy method for body fat) and are tested against known reference values. Results are estimates for planning, not professional advice.

Is my data stored?

No. All calculations run in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to a server.

Do the calculators work on my phone?

Yes. Every calculator is designed for mobile, tablet and desktop.
