Tips for beginners

  1. Control the centre. Open with a pawn to e4 or d4.
  2. Develop your pieces. Bring out knights and bishops before moving your queen far.
  3. Castle early to keep your king safe.
  4. Check before you move. Ask what your opponent's last move attacks, and whether your move leaves a piece undefended.

Checkers, Sudoku, and tic-tac-toe.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to play?

No. The game opens straight away with no sign-up or download, and your current game is saved in your browser so you can come back to it.

Which level should I start with?

Complete beginners should try Beginner, which makes frequent mistakes. Medium punishes pieces left undefended, and Hard and Expert think for up to one and three seconds per move, which makes them much tougher.

How do I castle?

Move your king two squares towards a rook; the rook jumps over automatically. You can't castle if the king or that rook has moved, if the king is in check, or if it would pass through or land on an attacked square.

What is en passant?

If an enemy pawn moves two squares and lands beside your pawn, you may capture it as if it had moved one square, but only on your very next move.

When is a game a draw?

On stalemate (no legal move but not in check), threefold repetition, 50 moves by each side with no capture or pawn move, or when neither side has enough pieces to checkmate.

Can I play other people online?

Yes. Sign in with Google on the Play Online page, then invite a friend with a link or find an opponent who's waiting. Playing the computer needs no account.

Are the games free?

Yes, all games are completely free, with no sign-up, download or in-game purchases.

Can I play against other people online?

Yes. Sign in with Google on the Play Online page to play chess, checkers, Ludo and tic-tac-toe with a friend or a waiting opponent. All games can also be played without an account.

Do the games work on phones?

Yes. Every game works with touch as well as a mouse and keyboard, and the boards resize to fit your screen.

Where are my best scores saved?

In your browser on this device. They're never sent to our servers, and clearing your browser data resets them.

What are the daily puzzles?

Sudoku and Word Scramble have a puzzle of the day that is the same for everyone and changes at midnight in your time zone, so you can compare results with friends.
