What is the mid-market rate?

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the price banks pay to buy a currency and the price they sell it for. It's the fairest benchmark, and it's what you see here. The rate you actually get is usually worse, because providers build a margin into it:

ProviderTypical margin over mid-market
Specialist money transfer services0.3–1%
Credit and debit cards0–3%
High-street banks2–5%
Airport exchange counters5–15%

How to spot a hidden margin

  1. Convert the amount here to see the mid-market value.
  2. Compare it with the amount the provider says the recipient will get.
  3. The difference, plus any fixed fee, is what the transfer really costs you.

US dollar to euro, pound to dollar, dollar to Indian rupee, dollar to Pakistani rupee, UAE dirham to rupee, Saudi riyal to rupee and euro to pound are among the most searched pairs. Choose any of them above, or click a currency in the comparison table to switch to it.

Add tax to a foreign price with the VAT calculator, check inflation, or compare salaries.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the exchange rates come from?

Rates come from ExchangeRate-API and are updated once a day. They're mid-market rates: the midpoint between buy and sell prices on global currency markets.

Why does my bank give me a different rate?

Banks, card providers and exchange counters add a margin to the mid-market rate, typically 1–5% (sometimes more at airports), and may charge fees. Use this converter as a benchmark to see how much you're really paying.

Can I use these rates for trading or invoices?

They're good for estimates, budgeting and comparing offers. For trading, accounting or legal documents, use the rate from your bank, broker or the official source your contract specifies.

How often are the rates updated?

Once every 24 hours. The time of the last update is shown under the result.

Are these calculators financial advice?

No. They do the math on the numbers you enter and are meant for planning and comparison. For decisions about investments, taxes or loans, check with a qualified adviser or your lender.

Is my financial information stored?

No. Everything except the currency rates runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.

Which currency symbols can I use?

Every calculator has a currency selector (USD, EUR, GBP, INR, PKR, JPY/CNY, AED or none). Your choice is remembered on this device.
