About Checkers

Classic American checkers, also known as English draughts, on an 8×8 board. Jump to capture, chain multiple jumps, and crown your men as kings. Play the computer at three levels or a friend on the same device.

Key features

  • Play the computer on easy, medium or hard
  • Two players on the same device
  • Compulsory captures and multiple jumps
  • Kings that move both ways
  • Movable pieces highlighted
  • Unlimited undo

How to play

Each side starts with 12 men on the dark squares. Men move one square diagonally forward. Red, at the bottom, moves first. Jump over an enemy piece into the empty square behind it to capture it, and keep jumping if you can.

Tips to win

  1. Keep your back row as long as you can. It stops your opponent from crowning kings.
  2. Control the centre, where pieces have more moves.
  3. Trade when you're ahead. One extra piece counts for more with fewer left on the board.
  4. Use forced captures. Since jumps are compulsory, you can give up one piece to set up a double jump.

Chess, Ludo, and tic-tac-toe.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to capture?

Yes. In American checkers (English draughts), if a jump is available you must take it. If several are available, you may choose any of them.

How do I get a king?

Move a man to the far row and it's crowned. Kings can move and jump both forwards and backwards. A man that's crowned during a jump ends its turn there.

How do I win?

Capture all your opponent's pieces, or leave them with no legal move. The game is a draw after 40 moves each with no capture and no man moved.

Are checkers and draughts the same?

Yes. 'Checkers' is the American name and 'draughts' the British one for this 8×8 game. International draughts is a different game, played on a 10×10 board with different rules.

Are the games free?

Yes, all games are completely free, with no sign-up, download or in-game purchases.

Can I play against other people online?

Yes. Sign in with Google on the Play Online page to play chess, checkers, Ludo and tic-tac-toe with a friend or a waiting opponent. All games can also be played without an account.

Do the games work on phones?

Yes. Every game works with touch as well as a mouse and keyboard, and the boards resize to fit your screen.

Where are my best scores saved?

In your browser on this device. They're never sent to our servers, and clearing your browser data resets them.

What are the daily puzzles?

Sudoku and Word Scramble have a puzzle of the day that is the same for everyone and changes at midnight in your time zone, so you can compare results with friends.
