Are you on track to retire?

This calculator answers three questions: how much you'll have at retirement, how much you'll need for the lifestyle you want, and what to change if there's a gap.

How it works

  1. Savings phase: your current savings and monthly contributions grow at your pre-retirement return until you retire.
  2. Income needed: your desired income (in today's money) is increased by inflation until retirement, and keeps rising with inflation each year after.
  3. Nest egg needed: the amount that, invested at your post-retirement return, can pay that rising income until the age you plan to.
  4. The gap: the difference, and the extra monthly saving that would close it.

Example

Age 30, retiring at 65 and planning to 90, with 25,000 saved and 500 a month, 7% return before retirement, 5% after and 3% inflation, wanting 40,000 a year in today's money:

ResultAmount
Projected savings at 65≈ 1.19 million
First-year income needed (inflation-adjusted)≈ 112,600
Nest egg needed≈ 2.21 million
Extra saving needed≈ 566 a month
Projected savings last untilage 76

Ways to close a retirement gap

  • Save more, especially early: money invested in your 30s has decades to compound.
  • Retire a few years later: you save for longer and draw down for fewer years.
  • Use employer matching in full; it's an immediate return on your money.
  • Reduce fees: a 1% lower annual fee can add up to tens of thousands over a career.

These projections are estimates based on constant returns and inflation. They are not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I need to retire?

It depends on the income you want, how long retirement lasts and investment returns. A common rule of thumb is about 25 times your yearly spending (the 4% rule). This calculator works it out from your own numbers, including inflation.

What is the 4% rule?

A guideline from US research suggesting that withdrawing 4% of your savings in the first year of retirement, then adjusting for inflation, has historically lasted about 30 years. It's a starting point, not a guarantee.

Should I include my pension or social security?

Yes, by reducing the income you need. If you want 40,000 a year and expect 15,000 from a pension or social security, enter 25,000.

What return should I assume?

Conservative assumptions are safer. Many planners use 5–7% a year before retirement for a mixed portfolio and 4–5% after retirement, when investments are usually less risky. Real returns vary year to year.

Are these calculators financial advice?

No. They do the math on the numbers you enter and are meant for planning and comparison. For decisions about investments, taxes or loans, check with a qualified adviser or your lender.

Is my financial information stored?

No. Everything except the currency rates runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.

Which currency symbols can I use?

Every calculator has a currency selector (USD, EUR, GBP, INR, PKR, JPY/CNY, AED or none). Your choice is remembered on this device.
