Password Strength Checker – How Secure Is My Password?

Check how strong your password is, how long it would take to crack, and whether it appeared in a data breach, without your password leaving your device.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Runs in your browser, nothing uploaded

About the Password Strength Checker

Find out how secure a password really is. It's analyzed for common passwords, names, words, dates and keyboard patterns, with crack-time estimates and an optional, private check against known data breaches.

Key features

  • Realistic strength score with zxcvbn
  • Crack-time estimates for four attack types
  • Detects common passwords, names, dates and keyboard patterns
  • Private breach check against Have I Been Pwned
  • Specific tips to improve your password
  • Your password never leaves your device

How strong is your password, really?

Simple meters that only count symbols and numbers give a false sense of security. This checker uses zxcvbn, an open-source estimator originally created at Dropbox, which looks for the patterns attackers actually try.

What the crack times mean

ScenarioGuesses per secondWhen it applies
Online, limited100 per hourLogging in to a site that blocks repeated attempts
Online, unlimited10 per secondA poorly protected login form
Offline, slow hash10,000 per secondA stolen database protected with bcrypt or similar
Offline, fast hash10 billion per secondA stolen database with weak hashing (MD5, SHA-1)

Four rules that matter most

  1. Use a unique password for every account; a password manager makes this easy.
  2. Make it long: 14+ characters, or a passphrase of 5–6 random words.
  3. Turn on two-factor authentication for email, banking and social media.
  4. Change any password found in a breach immediately.

Passphrase generator, password generator, and 2FA code generator.

How to use the Password Strength Checker

  1. Enter your text, password or settings in the tool above.
  2. Results appear instantly and are calculated in your browser.
  3. Read the explanation and warnings under the result.
  4. Copy what you need. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to type my password here?

The strength check runs entirely in your browser. The optional breach check sends only the first 5 characters of your password's SHA-1 hash to Have I Been Pwned, which returns hundreds of possible matches; the comparison happens on your device, so neither we nor they ever see your password. Even so, the safest habit is to test a similar password rather than the exact one.

What makes a password strong?

Length and unpredictability. A long passphrase of random words (14+ characters) is stronger than a short password with symbols. Avoid names, dates, common words, keyboard patterns (qwerty) and predictable substitutions (P@ssw0rd).

Why does my password with symbols score low?

Because attackers know the common tricks. 'Pakistan@2024' follows a pattern (word + symbol + year) that cracking tools try early, so it's much weaker than it looks.

What should I do if my password was found in a breach?

Stop using it everywhere and change it on every account where you used it. Use a password manager to create a unique password for each site, and turn on two-factor authentication.

Are my passwords and files sent to your servers?

No. All checks, hashing and encryption run in your browser using its built-in Web Crypto features. The only network request is the optional breach check, which sends just the first 5 characters of your password's SHA-1 hash, never the password.

Can I trust browser-based security tools?

These tools use the same standard algorithms (AES-GCM, PBKDF2, SHA-2, HMAC) built into your browser. Still, never type the passwords or 2FA secrets of important accounts into any website you don't control.

Do the tools work offline?

Yes. Once a page has loaded, everything except the breach check works without a connection.
