  • Fetches public pages only, nothing stored

About the Meta Tag Checker

Enter a URL (or paste HTML) to audit the SEO basics of any page: title and description length, indexability, canonical, robots.txt, headings, image alt text, Open Graph, Twitter cards and JSON-LD, with a Google result preview and a social share preview.

Key features

  • Audits title, meta description, canonical and robots directives
  • Google search result and social share previews
  • Checks robots.txt, HTTP status, redirects and HTTPS
  • Open Graph, Twitter/X card and JSON-LD structured data
  • Heading outline, image alt text and word count
  • Works with a live URL or pasted HTML

Audit any page's on-page SEO in seconds

Before a page can rank, search engines need to crawl it, index it and understand what it's about, and people need a reason to click it. The meta tag checker fetches a page the way a search engine does and checks the essentials: title, description, indexability, canonical, headings, social tags and structured data. It shows a preview of how the page appears in Google and when shared.

What gets checked

AreaChecks
BasicsTitle tag length, meta description length
IndexingMeta robots and X-Robots-Tag, canonical URL, robots.txt, hreflang
ContentSingle H1, amount of visible text, image alt attributes
Socialog:title, og:description, og:image, twitter:card
TechnicalViewport, language, charset, favicon, JSON-LD validity, HTTP status, redirects, HTTPS, response time

Each item is marked pass, warning, fail or info. The score is a quick summary of the basics, not a ranking prediction.

Common problems and fixes

  1. Page marked noindex by accident. Staging settings often leak to production. Remove noindex from the meta robots tag or the X-Robots-Tag header.
  2. Missing or duplicate titles. Every page needs a unique title that describes its content.
  3. Canonical pointing elsewhere. If the canonical URL isn't the page itself, Google will usually index the other URL instead.
  4. No og:image. Links shared on social media and chat apps appear without a picture and get fewer clicks.
  5. Invalid JSON-LD. A single syntax error disables the whole block. Validate after every edit.

Privacy and limits

Pages are fetched on demand by our server, analyzed in your browser and not stored. Only public http(s) addresses on standard ports can be checked, and only the first 2 MB of HTML is analyzed.

Create tags with the Meta Tag Generator, check crawl rules with the Robots.txt Tester, or build a sitemap. For keyword density, use the Word Frequency Counter.

How to use the Meta Tag Checker

  1. Enter the address of the page or website you want to check.
  2. Click the button. Our server fetches the public page (it can't reach private or local addresses).
  3. Review the results, starting with anything marked in red or amber.
  4. Fix the issues on your site, then run the check again to confirm.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a title tag be?

Around 30–60 characters. Google truncates titles by pixel width (about 600 px on desktop), so very long titles end with an ellipsis. Put the most important words first.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly, but a clear, compelling description can improve click-through rate. Google rewrites it in many results, especially when it doesn't match the search query.

Why does the checker show different results from what I see in my browser?

We analyze the HTML the server sends. Tags added later by JavaScript (common in single-page apps) may be missing. Google renders JavaScript, but server-rendered tags are more reliable.

Can I check a page on my local or staging server?

Only public sites can be fetched. For pages behind a login, on localhost or on an intranet, open the page, view its source, and use the 'Paste HTML' option.

Do these tools store the pages I check?

No. Pages and robots.txt files are fetched on demand to analyze them and are not saved. The robots.txt generator, tester and meta tag generator run entirely in your browser.

Can I check pages on localhost or my intranet?

No. For security, our server only fetches public websites. For a private page, use the 'Paste HTML' option of the meta tag checker.

Do the tools respect robots.txt?

The sitemap crawler follows your robots.txt rules and skips pages marked noindex, just like a search engine would.
