Probability of streaks

Streak (same side)Chance
2 in a row1 in 4 (25%)
3 in a row1 in 8 (12.5%)
5 in a row1 in 32 (3.1%)
10 in a row1 in 1,024 (0.1%)

These are the chances of a specific sequence starting now. Over hundreds of flips, long streaks become very likely.

Classroom experiment

  1. Ask students to predict how many heads they'll get in 10, 50 and 100 flips.
  2. Flip and record the tally at each point.
  3. Notice how the percentage settles closer to 50% as the number of flips grows: the law of large numbers.

Roll dice with the Dice Roller, pick from more options with Spin the Wheel, or generate numbers with the Random Number Generator.

How to use the Coin Flip

  1. Open the tool. It's ready to use immediately, with nothing to install.
  2. Enter your entries, numbers or settings, or keep the defaults.
  3. Press the main button (spin, roll, start or generate) and watch the result.
  4. Repeat as often as you like; results are generated fresh each time in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Is the virtual coin fair?

Yes. Each flip uses a cryptographically secure random bit, so heads and tails are exactly equally likely. Real coins can have tiny biases; this one doesn't.

Why did I get heads five times in a row?

Streaks are normal. The chance of five heads in a row is 1 in 32, so in a long series of flips you'll see streaks like that regularly. Each flip is independent of the last.

What are the odds of heads?

Exactly 50% on every flip. Over many flips the tally will approach 50/50, but short runs often look uneven.

Can I use it to make decisions?

Sure. Assign an option to each side before flipping. Some people find that their reaction to the result tells them what they really wanted.

Are the random results fair?

Yes. The wheel, random number generator, coin flip and dice use your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) with unbiased sampling, so every outcome is equally likely.

Do these tools work offline or on my phone?

They run entirely in your browser and work on phones, tablets and computers. Once a page has loaded, most tools keep working without a connection.

Is anything I type saved on your servers?

No. The notepad saves notes only in your own browser's local storage, and nothing else you enter is stored.
