  • Free, no sign-up
  • Runs in your browser, nothing uploaded

About the Webcam Test

Check your webcam before a video call. See a live preview, the real resolution and frame rate your camera delivers, switch between cameras and save a snapshot.

Key features

  • Live camera preview
  • Actual resolution (720p, 1080p, 4K)
  • Reported and measured frame rate
  • Maximum supported resolution
  • Switch between cameras
  • Mirror view and PNG snapshot

Make sure your camera works before a call

Click Start webcam test and allow access to see a live preview. The panel shows the resolution and frame rate your camera is really delivering, which can differ from what the box says, especially through USB hubs or in low light.

Resolution guide

ResolutionNameTypical use
640 × 480VGAOlder laptops
1280 × 720HD (720p)Most laptop webcams
1920 × 1080Full HD (1080p)Good external webcams
3840 × 21604KPremium webcams and cameras

The test asks for up to 1080p, so 4K cameras show as 1080p here; the maximum resolution line shows what the camera supports.

Tips for a better picture

  • Light your face from the front, for example with a window or lamp behind the screen.
  • Avoid bright windows behind you, which turn you into a silhouette.
  • Raise the camera to eye level.
  • Clean the lens: laptop cameras collect fingerprints.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my webcam not working?

Check that the browser has camera permission (icon in the address bar), that no other app such as Zoom, Teams or OBS is using the camera, that a privacy shutter or function key hasn't disabled it, and that your operating system's privacy settings allow the browser to use the camera.

Why is my webcam image mirrored?

Most video apps show your own preview mirrored because it feels natural, like a mirror. Other people see you the right way round. Use the Mirror button to switch views; snapshots are always saved unmirrored.

Why is my frame rate low?

In dim light many webcams lower the frame rate to let in more light per frame. Add more light in front of you. USB bandwidth, hubs and power-saving modes can also reduce the frame rate.

Is the video recorded or uploaded?

No. The preview is shown directly from your camera inside your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. Snapshots are saved straight to your device.

Are my camera and microphone recorded?

No. Audio and video are processed live in your browser and never uploaded. The only recording is the optional 5-second mic playback, which stays on your device and disappears when you leave the page.

Why does my browser ask for permission?

Browsers require your permission before any site can use your camera or microphone. You can revoke it at any time from the icon in the address bar.

Do these tests work on phones?

Most do: mic, webcam, speaker, screen, reaction time and click tests work on phones and tablets. The keyboard, mouse and gamepad testers need those devices connected.
