Example

With 5 tola of gold, 500,000 in the bank and 100,000 of debts due, at a gold price of 350,000 per tola and a silver price of 4,000 per tola:

  • Gold: 5 × 350,000 = 1,750,000
  • Net wealth: 1,750,000 + 500,000 − 100,000 = 2,150,000
  • Silver nisab: 52.5 × 4,000 = 210,000, so Zakat is due
  • Zakat: 2,150,000 × 2.5% = 53,750

Frequently asked questions

What is the nisab?

The minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must have, held for one lunar year, before Zakat becomes due. It equals the value of 87.48 g (7.5 tola) of gold or 612.36 g (52.5 tola) of silver.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Scholars differ. The silver nisab is lower, so more people pay Zakat and the poor benefit more; many scholars recommend it, especially when your wealth is in mixed forms. Others use gold. Follow the guidance of a scholar you trust.

How much Zakat do I pay?

2.5% (one-fortieth) of your net zakatable wealth, once it has been above the nisab for a full lunar year (hawl).

Do I pay Zakat on my house, car or jewellery?

Not on your home, car, clothes or household items for personal use. Gold and silver jewellery is treated differently by different schools: the Hanafi school counts it, while others exempt jewellery worn regularly. Business assets and investments are generally zakatable.

How are prayer times calculated?

Astronomically, from the sun's position at your location, using established methods such as the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi, the Muslim World League, Umm al-Qura and ISNA. The method and Asr rule default to your country's convention and can be changed.

Why might times differ from my mosque?

Mosques may use a different method or add a few precautionary minutes, especially for Fajr, Maghrib and Isha. Follow your local mosque if its timetable differs.

Are Hijri dates exact?

They follow the Umm al-Qura calendar. Where months begin with local moon sighting, the actual date can be a day later.
