Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on an amount?

Multiply the amount by the GST rate. For 1,000 at 18%: 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = 180 GST, so the total is 1,180.

How do I remove GST from a GST-inclusive price?

Divide by 1 plus the rate. For 1,180 including 18% GST: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = 1,000 before GST, so the GST is 180. Taking 18% of 1,180 (212.40) would be wrong.

What are CGST, SGST and IGST?

For a sale within one state, GST is split equally between the central government (CGST) and the state (SGST, or UTGST in union territories). For a sale from one state to another, the whole amount is IGST.

What are the current GST rates in India?

Since 22 September 2025, most goods and services fall into two main slabs, 5% and 18%, with 40% for luxury and sin goods. Special rates include 3% for gold and silver and 0.25% for rough diamonds. The 12% and 28% slabs still appear on older invoices and a few items, so check the rate for your product or service.
