Frequently asked questions

Which calculation method should I use?

Use the method your local mosque or Islamic authority follows. By default the tool picks your country's usual method: University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi for Pakistan, India and Bangladesh; Umm al-Qura for Saudi Arabia; ISNA for North America; and the Muslim World League for many other places.

What is the difference between Hanafi and standard Asr?

Asr starts when an object's shadow equals its length plus its noon shadow (standard: Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali), or twice its length plus the noon shadow (Hanafi). Hanafi Asr is therefore later, often by 40 minutes to an hour.

Why are my times different from my mosque's timetable?

Mosques may use a different method, add precautionary minutes (often to Fajr, Maghrib and Isha), or use fixed times for congregation. The adhan time and the jama'ah (congregation) time are also different.

Does it work in high latitudes like the UK and Canada?

Yes. In summer, when twilight lasts all night, Fajr and Isha are estimated with a recognized high-latitude rule. Many communities in those regions follow a local timetable, so check with your mosque.

How are prayer times calculated?

Astronomically, from the sun's position at your location, using established methods such as the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi, the Muslim World League, Umm al-Qura and ISNA. The method and Asr rule default to your country's convention and can be changed.

Why might times differ from my mosque?

Mosques may use a different method or add a few precautionary minutes, especially for Fajr, Maghrib and Isha. Follow your local mosque if its timetable differs.

Are Hijri dates exact?

They follow the Umm al-Qura calendar. Where months begin with local moon sighting, the actual date can be a day later.
