Check your microphone in seconds

Before a Zoom, Teams, Google Meet or Discord call, an interview or a recording session, make sure people will actually hear you. Click Start microphone test, allow access, and speak: the level meter moves and a green message confirms your mic is working.

Reading the level meter

Meter while speakingWhat it means
No movement at allWrong device, muted mic, or no permission
Below −45 dBVery quiet: move closer or raise the input volume
−30 to −12 dBGood level for calls and recordings
Near 0 dB, redToo loud: lower the input volume to avoid distortion

The test shows your raw input, with echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain turned off, so you hear what your microphone really picks up.

Troubleshooting checklist

  1. Permission: allow microphone access in the address bar.
  2. Device: pick the right microphone from the list (headsets often appear separately).
  3. Mute: check hardware mute switches and keyboard mute keys.
  4. Other apps: close apps that might be holding the mic exclusively.
  5. System settings: make sure the browser is allowed to use the microphone, and the input volume isn't at zero.
  6. Bluetooth headsets: some switch to a lower-quality "headset" mode when the mic is in use; that's normal.

Webcam test, speaker test, and keyboard tester.

How to use the Mic Test

  1. Click Start and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  2. Check the live result: it shows straight away whether your device is working.
  3. Pick a different device from the list if you have more than one.
  4. Everything is processed on your device; nothing is recorded or uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't my microphone working?

The most common causes are: the browser was denied permission (click the icon in the address bar to allow it), the wrong input device is selected, the mic is muted with a hardware switch or key, another app is using it, or the operating system's privacy settings block the browser from using the microphone.

How do I allow microphone access?

When the browser asks, click Allow. If you blocked it earlier, click the microphone or lock icon in the address bar and change the setting to Allow, then reload. On Windows, also check Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone; on macOS, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.

What level should my microphone show?

When speaking normally, aim for roughly −30 to −12 dB on the meter. Constant readings near 0 dB will distort; readings below −45 dB while talking mean the mic is too quiet or too far away.

Is my voice recorded or uploaded?

No. The level meter analyzes audio live in your browser. The optional 5-second recording stays in your browser's memory for playback and is discarded when you leave the page.

Are my camera and microphone recorded?

No. Audio and video are processed live in your browser and never uploaded. The only recording is the optional 5-second mic playback, which stays on your device and disappears when you leave the page.

Why does my browser ask for permission?

Browsers require your permission before any site can use your camera or microphone. You can revoke it at any time from the icon in the address bar.

Do these tests work on phones?

Most do: mic, webcam, speaker, screen, reaction time and click tests work on phones and tablets. The keyboard, mouse and gamepad testers need those devices connected.
