Which letters should I guess first?

E, T, A, O, I and N are among the most common letters in English, so they're good first guesses. Then look at the pattern:

  • A word ending _ _ I N G often means a verb form.
  • Q is nearly always followed by U.
  • Common pairs include TH, CH, SH and ST.

Frequently asked questions

How do I play hangman?

Guess letters one at a time. Correct letters appear in the word, and each wrong letter adds to the drawing. Guess the whole word before the drawing is finished.

How many wrong guesses do I get?

8 on easy, 6 on normal and 4 on hard. A change of level applies straight away.

Where do the words come from?

From the EFF's long word list, a public list of common English words published under CC BY 3.0.

Are the games free?

Yes, all games are completely free, with no sign-up, download or in-game purchases.

Can I play against other people online?

Yes. Sign in with Google on the Play Online page to play chess, checkers, Ludo and tic-tac-toe with a friend or a waiting opponent. All games can also be played without an account.
