Why convert to WebP?

WebP is a modern image format created by Google that produces significantly smaller files than JPG and PNG at the same visual quality. Smaller images mean faster page loads, better Core Web Vitals (especially Largest Contentful Paint), lower bandwidth costs and better SEO. Google PageSpeed Insights specifically recommends serving images in next-gen formats like WebP.

Choosing a quality setting

  • 85% (default): excellent quality and big savings, ideal for websites.
  • 90–95%: hero images and photography portfolios.
  • 70–80%: thumbnails, blog images and product grids.

Using WebP on your website

With a fallback for very old browsers:

  <source srcset="photo.webp" type="image/webp">
  <img src="photo.jpg" alt="Description" width="800" height="600">
</picture>

WordPress (5.8+), Shopify, Next.js, Webflow and most modern CMSs accept WebP uploads directly.

Tips

  • Convert originals, not already-compressed images, for the best quality.
  • Always set width and height on <img> tags to avoid layout shift.
  • Need it even smaller? Run the WebP through the Image Compressor with a maximum width.

Convert WebP back to JPG for compatibility with WebP to JPG. Convert iPhone photos first with HEIC to JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Do all browsers support WebP?

Yes. Every modern browser, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 14+ on macOS Big Sur and iOS 14 or later, supports WebP. That covers over 97% of users.

How much smaller is WebP?

Google's studies found lossy WebP is 25–34% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality, and lossless WebP is about 26% smaller than PNG. Results vary by image.

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes. Unlike JPG, WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent PNGs stay transparent.

Should I use WebP or AVIF?

AVIF compresses even better but encodes more slowly and has slightly less support in older software. WebP is the safe, fast default for websites today.

Are my images uploaded?

Most image tools run in your browser. Only Word→JPG, JPG→Word and JPG→HEIC send the file to our server, where it is processed and deleted right away.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Drop multiple files and download them one by one or as a ZIP.

Will converting reduce quality?

Lossless formats like PNG keep full quality. For JPG and WebP you can pick the quality level yourself.
