Frequently asked questions

What is today's Hijri date?

It's shown at the top of the converter, in English and Arabic, using the Umm al-Qura calendar.

What is the Umm al-Qura calendar?

The official Islamic calendar of Saudi Arabia, based on astronomical calculations for Makkah. It's widely used for planning, though many countries start months by local moon sighting.

Why is the Hijri year shorter?

The Islamic calendar is lunar: 12 months of 29 or 30 days make about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the solar year. That's why Ramadan and Eid move earlier each year.

What does AH mean?

Anno Hegirae, 'in the year of the Hijra': years are counted from the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE.

How are prayer times calculated?

Astronomically, from the sun's position at your location, using established methods such as the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi, the Muslim World League, Umm al-Qura and ISNA. The method and Asr rule default to your country's convention and can be changed.

Why might times differ from my mosque?

Mosques may use a different method or add a few precautionary minutes, especially for Fajr, Maghrib and Isha. Follow your local mosque if its timetable differs.

Are Hijri dates exact?

They follow the Umm al-Qura calendar. Where months begin with local moon sighting, the actual date can be a day later.
