PNG files of photographs are often huge because PNG compression is lossless. Converting them to JPG can shrink file sizes by 50–90% with no visible difference, which means faster websites, smaller email attachments and more space on your phone or cloud storage.

What about transparency?

PNG supports transparent pixels; JPG doesn't. When converting, transparent areas are filled with a background color:

  • White: best for documents, product photos and most websites.
  • Black: best for images that will appear on dark backgrounds.

If you need to keep transparency at a smaller size, use JPG to WebP, which accepts PNG input and supports transparency.

When PNG to JPG makes sense

  • Photos exported as PNG from phones, editors or screenshot tools.
  • Email attachments with size limits.
  • Website images, to improve page speed and Core Web Vitals.
  • Upload forms that only accept JPG.
  • Bulk photo libraries taking up too much disk space.

When to keep PNG

Logos, icons, diagrams, screenshots with text and images with transparency usually look better and stay smaller as PNG.

Frequently asked questions

What quality setting should I use?

90% is visually indistinguishable from the original for most images. 75–85% is great for the web. Below 60% you'll start to see blocky artifacts around edges and text.

What happens to transparency?

JPG doesn't support transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background color you choose (white by default).

Should I convert screenshots to JPG?

Usually not. Screenshots with text and flat colors look sharper and are often smaller as PNG. JPG is best for photographs.

Why are my files so much smaller?

JPG uses lossy compression tuned for photos, discarding detail the eye barely notices. For photographic PNGs, that typically saves 50–90%.

Are my images uploaded?

Most image tools run in your browser. Only Word→JPG, JPG→Word and JPG→HEIC send the file to our server, where it is processed and deleted right away.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Drop multiple files and download them one by one or as a ZIP.

Will converting reduce quality?

Lossless formats like PNG keep full quality. For JPG and WebP you can pick the quality level yourself.
