Using a 5-color palette

A common split is the 60-30-10 rule: about 60% a neutral background, 30% a main brand color and 10% an accent for buttons and links. Check your text and background pairs with the contrast checker before you publish.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep a color I like?

Click the lock icon on that color. Locked colors stay put when you generate again, and in harmony styles the new colors are chosen to go with them.

Can I share a palette?

Yes. The page address updates with every palette, so click Copy share link and send it. Opening the link shows exactly the same five colors.

Which style should I choose?

Analogous and monochrome feel calm and cohesive, complementary and triadic give strong contrast for accents, pastel suits soft brands and kids' products, and earthy works for natural, food and outdoor themes.

Can I use the palettes commercially?

Yes. Colors can't be owned, so you're free to use any palette in personal or commercial work.

Are these design tools free?

Yes. Every tool is free with no sign-up, and you can use the colors and code in personal and commercial projects.

Do you upload my images?

No. The color blindness simulator and every other tool run entirely in your browser, so your images and colors stay on your device.

Which code formats can I copy?

HEX, RGB and HSL values, plain CSS, CSS variables, SCSS variables, and Tailwind classes or theme config for both Tailwind v3 and v4.

What is a good contrast ratio?

WCAG AA asks for at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text, icons and borders. AAA asks for 7:1 for normal text.
