Convert videos to a format that plays everywhere

iPhones save MOV files, screen recorders often save WebM or MKV, and old cameras produce AVI. If a video won't play, upload or attach, converting it to MP4 almost always solves the problem.

How to use the Video Converter

  1. Drop your file into the box, or click to choose one.
  2. Choose the options you want; the defaults suit most files.
  3. Click the button. The first time, the media engine (about a 9 MB download) loads once and is then cached.
  4. Wait for the progress bar, preview the result and download it. Your file never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Which format should I choose?

MP4 with H.264 video plays on every phone, computer, TV, social network and messaging app, so choose it unless you have a specific reason not to.

What is fast mode?

A video file is a container (MP4, MOV, MKV) holding compressed video and audio. If the video inside is already H.264, as it is in most phone recordings, fast mode just moves it into a new container in seconds, with no quality loss.

Fast mode failed or the video won't play. Why?

The video inside isn't compatible with the new container. Untick fast mode to re-encode it properly; it takes longer but always works.

Can I convert to WebM?

Not at the moment. Encoding WebM is unreliable in the browser engine we use, so we only offer formats we can produce reliably. MP4 is accepted almost everywhere WebM is.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. Every tool runs in your browser using ffmpeg.wasm and your browser's own recording features. Your files never leave your device, which also means there's no upload wait.

Why does the first conversion take longer?

The first time you use a conversion tool, your browser downloads the media engine (about 9 MB). It's then cached, so later conversions start straight away.

How big can files be?

Up to 1 GB. Processing speed depends on your computer: short clips take seconds, while long HD videos can take several minutes. A desktop browser is faster than a phone.

Is there a watermark or time limit?

No watermarks, no sign-up and no limits on how many files you process.
