Frequently asked questions

How do I convert EST to my time?

Set 'Convert from' to Eastern Time (type EST), choose the date and time, and add your city. The converter applies daylight saving time automatically, so EDT is used in summer.

Why do time differences change during the year?

Many countries move their clocks forward in spring and back in autumn, but on different dates, and many countries (such as Pakistan, India and the UAE) don't use daylight saving at all. The gap between two cities can therefore change by an hour for a few weeks each year.

What's the difference between GMT and UTC?

For everyday use they're the same time. UTC is the precise scientific standard; GMT is the time zone used in the UK in winter. In summer the UK switches to BST (UTC+1).

Are the converted times remembered?

The list of cities you convert to is saved in your browser so it's ready next time.

Do these tools handle daylight saving time?

Yes. Conversions use your browser's up-to-date time-zone database, so clock changes in the US, Europe and elsewhere are applied for the exact date you choose.

Which cities can I search?

Around 2,800 cities worldwide, plus common time-zone names such as UTC, GMT, EST, PST, CET, IST, PKT and GST.

Is anything saved?

Your chosen city lists are remembered in your own browser so they're ready next time. Nothing is sent to a server.
