Design realistic shadows

Shadows show which elements sit above others and make buttons and cards feel clickable. Adjust the sliders and watch the preview, or start from a preset and tweak it.

Box shadow syntax

box-shadow: [inset] x-offset y-offset blur spread color;

ValueMeaning
x-offsetMoves the shadow right (positive) or left
y-offsetMoves the shadow down (positive) or up

spreadGrows (positive) or shrinks the shadow
insetPuts the shadow inside the element

Tips for natural shadows

  • Use low opacity (5–20%) black, or a dark version of the background color.
  • Light usually comes from above, so use a positive Y offset and little or no X offset.
  • Combine a small, sharp layer with a large, soft one.

CSS gradient generator, color palette generator and CSS minifier.

Frequently asked questions

What do blur and spread do?

Blur softens the edge of the shadow; larger values make it fuzzier. Spread grows or shrinks the shadow before blurring; negative spread makes a tighter shadow that looks more natural.

Why use several layers?

Real shadows have a dark, sharp part close to the object and a soft, wide part further away. Stacking two or three layers with different blur recreates that and looks much more realistic.

What is neumorphism?

A soft 3D style where an element seems pressed out of the background, made with a dark shadow on one side and a light shadow on the other, on a background the same color as the element.

Does box-shadow slow down my page?

Static shadows are cheap. Animating large blurred shadows can be slow; for hover effects, animate the opacity of a pseudo-element that has the shadow instead.

Are these design tools free?

Yes. Every tool is free with no sign-up, and you can use the colors and code in personal and commercial projects.

Do you upload my images?

No. The color blindness simulator and every other tool run entirely in your browser, so your images and colors stay on your device.

Which code formats can I copy?

HEX, RGB and HSL values, plain CSS, CSS variables, SCSS variables, and Tailwind classes or theme config for both Tailwind v3 and v4.

What is a good contrast ratio?

WCAG AA asks for at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text, icons and borders. AAA asks for 7:1 for normal text.
