About the Base64 to Image

Paste a Base64 string or data URI to preview the image and download it. The format is detected automatically.

Key features

  • Decodes Base64 strings and data URIs into images
  • Detects PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, SVG and ICO automatically
  • Instant preview on a transparency grid
  • Download with the correct file extension
  • Accepts URL-safe Base64 and line-wrapped input
  • Decoded locally in your browser

View and save Base64 images

Base64-encoded images turn up in API responses, HTML emails, CSS files, database records, logs and AI APIs (both vision inputs and generated images). They're just long strings of text, so you can't see what they contain. Base64 to Image decodes the string, shows the image and lets you download it as a proper file.

Accepted input

InputExample
Data URIdata:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgo…
Raw Base64iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAA…
URL-safe Base64Uses - and _ instead of + and /
Line-wrapped Base64Spaces and line breaks are ignored

How the format is detected

If there's no data: prefix, the format is identified from the file signature:

Starts with (hex)Format
89 50 4E 47PNG
FF D8 FFJPEG
47 49 46GIF
52 49 46 46WebP (RIFF container)
<svg textSVG
00 00 01 00ICO

Common scenarios

  • Debugging APIs that return thumbnails, QR codes or signatures as Base64.
  • Extracting images from HTML emails or exported HTML files.
  • Checking AI-generated images returned as b64_json.
  • Recovering images stored in databases or localStorage.
  • Verifying data URIs in CSS before shipping.

Encode images with Image to Base64. For Base64 that contains JSON, use Base64 to JSON.

Frequently asked questions

How does it know the image type without a data URI prefix?

It reads the first bytes of the decoded data, the 'magic number' that every image format starts with (for example PNG files begin with 89 50 4E 47).

Why is nothing displayed?

The string may be incomplete, may not be an image (for example a PDF or JSON), or may contain characters outside Base64. Make sure you copied the entire string.

Can I decode Base64 from an API response?

Yes. Paste the value of the image field. If it's inside JSON, copy only the text between the quotes.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Decoding and previewing happen entirely in your browser.

Are my images uploaded?

Most image tools run in your browser. Only Word→JPG, JPG→Word and JPG→HEIC send the file to our server, where it is processed and deleted right away.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Drop multiple files and download them one by one or as a ZIP.

Will converting reduce quality?

Lossless formats like PNG keep full quality. For JPG and WebP you can pick the quality level yourself.
