About the Base64 to JSON

Decode a Base64 or Base64URL string and view the JSON inside it, formatted and validated.

Key features

  • Decodes standard Base64 and URL-safe Base64URL
  • Restores missing = padding automatically
  • Ignores whitespace and line breaks in the input
  • Strips data: URI prefixes
  • UTF-8 decoding for emoji and non-Latin text
  • Validates and pretty-prints the decoded JSON

Decode Base64 back to JSON

Base64-encoded JSON shows up everywhere: Kubernetes secrets, JWT tokens, webhook signatures, cookies, URL parameters, message queues and environment variables. This tool decodes it and shows the JSON inside, formatted and validated, so you can read it immediately.

Example

eyJ1c2VyIjoiYWRhIiwicm9sZSI6ImFkbWluIn0=

decodes to:

{
  "user": "ada",
  "role": "admin"
}

Inputs it understands

InputHandled
Standard Base64 (+, /, =)✅
Base64URL (-, _, no padding)✅
Missing = padding✅ added automatically
Line-wrapped Base64 (76 chars per line)✅ whitespace ignored
data:application/json;base64,...✅ prefix stripped

Where to find Base64 JSON

  • Kubernetes: kubectl get secret my-secret -o jsonpath='{.data.config}'
  • JWT tokens: the middle segment of xxxxx.yyyyy.zzzzz
  • AWS: CloudWatch Logs subscription data and some Lambda event payloads
  • GitHub API: file contents returned by the contents endpoint
  • Browser storage and cookies set by single-page apps

Decoding in code

// Browser / Node.js, UTF-8 safe
const json = JSON.parse(new TextDecoder().decode(Uint8Array.from(atob(b64), c => c.charCodeAt(0))));
echo 'eyJ1c2VyIjoiYWRhIn0=' | base64 --decode

Encode JSON with JSON to Base64. Inspect tokens properly with the JWT Decoder. Decoded an image instead? Use Base64 to Image.

How to use the Base64 to JSON

  1. Paste your data into the input box, upload a file, or click Sample to try it out.
  2. Adjust the options above the editor if you need to (indentation, delimiter, and so on).
  3. The JSON appears instantly in the output panel. Any errors are shown with their line and column.
  4. Click Copy to copy the result, or Download to save it as a file.

Frequently asked questions

Why does decoding fail with 'not valid Base64'?

The input contains characters outside the Base64 alphabet, or it was truncated. Check that you copied the whole string. Spaces and line breaks are fine; they're ignored.

It decoded, but says the result isn't valid JSON.

The Base64 was valid but contains something other than JSON, for example plain text, a binary file or compressed (gzip) data. Gzipped data must be decompressed before it becomes JSON.

Can I decode a JWT with this?

You can decode one segment at a time, but the JWT Decoder is easier: it splits the token, decodes header and payload, and shows expiry dates.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Decoding happens in your browser, so it's safe for tokens, Kubernetes secrets and other sensitive values.

Is my JSON uploaded to a server?

No. All JSON tools run entirely in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.

Is there a size limit?

There is no fixed limit. Files of several megabytes work fine; very large files depend on your device's memory.

Do I need an account?

No. Every JSON tool is free and works without signing up.
