About the Stock Average Calculator
Combine several purchases of the same stock or crypto to get your average buy price, check your profit or loss at the current price, and plan how many shares to buy to average down (or up) to a target.
Key features
- Average price across any number of purchases
- Total shares and total invested
- Profit or loss at the current price
- Plan how many shares to buy to reach a target average
- Works for stocks, ETFs, mutual fund units and crypto
- Any currency
Know your real cost per share
If you've bought the same stock at different prices, your break-even point is your average price, not your first purchase price. Add each purchase to see your average, your current profit or loss, and how much more to buy to reach a target average.
Example
| Purchase | Shares | Price | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 100 | 50 | 5,000 |
| 2 | 50 | 40 | 2,000 |
| Total | 150 | 46.67 average | 7,000 |
To bring the average down to 40 by buying at 30, you'd need 100 more shares (3,000).
Averaging down: think before you buy
- Ask why the price fell. Averaging down works only if the business is still sound.
- Watch your position size. Each purchase concentrates more of your money in one stock.
- Consider averaging into a plan, such as regular monthly purchases (SIP), instead of reacting to price drops.
