About the Auto Loan Calculator

Estimate your monthly car loan payment the way dealers do: include the down payment, trade-in value and any amount still owed, sales tax and fees, then compare terms from 24 to 84 months.

Key features

  • Monthly car payment
  • Down payment and trade-in
  • Negative equity (amount owed on trade-in)
  • Sales tax and fees included
  • Terms from 24 to 84 months
  • Full amortization schedule

Estimate your car payment

The sticker price is only part of the story. Your monthly payment also depends on the down payment, trade-in, sales tax, dealer fees, interest rate and loan term. Enter them all to see the real payment and total cost.

How the amount financed is worked out

Amount financed = Price − Down payment − Trade-in value
                  + Amount owed on trade-in
                  + Sales tax on (Price − Trade-in)
                  + Fees

Example: 35,000 car at 6.9% APR

With 5,000 down, 7% sales tax and 800 in fees, the amount financed is 33,250:

TermMonthly paymentTotal interest
36 months1,025.143,655.18
48 months794.674,894.20
60 months656.826,159.33
72 months565.287,450.46
84 months500.218,767.45

Stretching from 48 to 84 months lowers the payment by about 295 but costs almost 3,900 more in interest.

Tips before you sign

  • Get pre-approved by a bank or credit union so you can compare with the dealer's financing.
  • Negotiate the price first, then talk about financing and trade-in separately.
  • Check the APR, not just the monthly payment.
  • Watch for add-ons such as extended warranties rolled into the loan.

Frequently asked questions

How is a car loan payment calculated?

The amount financed (price minus down payment and trade-in, plus tax, fees and any amount owed on the trade-in) is spread over the term with a standard amortizing loan formula, the same one used for mortgages.

Is sales tax charged on the trade-in value?

In most US states, sales tax applies to the price minus the trade-in value, which is how this calculator works. A few states tax the full price; if yours does, set the trade-in to 0 and subtract it from the down payment instead.

Is a longer car loan a good idea?

A longer term lowers the monthly payment but increases the total interest, and you may owe more than the car is worth for longer (negative equity). Choose the shortest term you can comfortably afford.

How much should I put down on a car?

A common guideline is 20% for a new car and 10% for a used one. A bigger down payment means a smaller loan, less interest and less risk of negative equity.

Are these calculators financial advice?

No. They do the math on the numbers you enter and are meant for planning and comparison. For decisions about investments, taxes or loans, check with a qualified adviser or your lender.

Is my financial information stored?

No. Everything except the currency rates runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.

Which currency symbols can I use?

Every calculator has a currency selector (USD, EUR, GBP, INR, PKR, JPY/CNY, AED or none). Your choice is remembered on this device.
