Measure the return on any investment

Return on investment (ROI) is the simplest way to see how well an investment performed. Use it for shares, property, a business project, equipment or an ad campaign.

ROI formulas

ROI            = (Final value − Invested) ÷ Invested × 100
Annualized ROI = (Final value ÷ Invested)^(1 ÷ years) − 1

Why annualized ROI matters

InvestmentTotal ROIYears heldAnnualized
A45%313.2%
B60%68.1%

Investment B has the higher total ROI, but A earned more per year.

ROI for marketing

For a campaign, use the cost of the campaign as the amount invested and the profit it generated (not revenue) plus that cost as the amount returned. Revenue alone overstates ROI.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate ROI?

ROI = (Final value − Amount invested) ÷ Amount invested × 100. Investing 10,000 and getting back 14,500 is a gain of 4,500, so ROI = 45%.

What is annualized ROI?

The equivalent yearly return. A 45% ROI over 3 years is about 13.19% a year, because returns compound: (14,500 ÷ 10,000)^(1/3) − 1.

What is a good ROI?

It depends on the risk and the time involved. For comparison, broad stock markets have historically returned around 7–10% a year over long periods, before inflation. Always compare investments by annualized ROI.

Should I include costs and income?

Yes. Add all costs (fees, commissions, repairs) to the amount invested, and include dividends, rent or interest received in the amount returned for an accurate ROI.

Are these calculators financial advice?

No. They do the math on the numbers you enter and are meant for planning and comparison. For decisions about investments, taxes or loans, check with a qualified adviser or your lender.

Is my financial information stored?

No. Everything except the currency rates runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.

Which currency symbols can I use?

Every calculator has a currency selector (USD, EUR, GBP, INR, PKR, JPY/CNY, AED or none). Your choice is remembered on this device.
