Find the true yearly growth rate

CAGR turns growth over several years into a single, comparable yearly rate. It's widely used for investments, mutual funds, company revenue and market sizes.

The CAGR formula

CAGR = (Ending value ÷ Beginning value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1

Frequently asked questions

What is CAGR?

Compound annual growth rate: the steady yearly growth rate that would take a value from its beginning amount to its ending amount over a period, assuming growth compounds each year.

How is CAGR calculated?

CAGR = (Ending value ÷ Beginning value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1. Growing from 10,000 to 25,000 in 5 years gives (2.5)^(0.2) − 1 = 20.11% a year.

What's the difference between CAGR and average return?

The simple average of yearly returns ignores compounding and can be misleading. A +50% year followed by a −50% year averages 0%, but you'd actually have lost 25%. CAGR reflects what really happened.

What are the limits of CAGR?

CAGR smooths out the ups and downs, so it doesn't show volatility, and it ignores money added or withdrawn during the period.
