See text the way a computer stores it
Everything on a computer is stored as bits, ones and zeros. This tool shows your text as binary, one byte per character for plain English. It's popular in computer-science classes, coding clubs, escape rooms, and for writing secret messages on cards and t-shirts.
Example
Hi! becomes 01001000 01101001 00100001.
| Character | Decimal | Binary |
|---|---|---|
| H | 72 | 01001000 |
| i | 105 | 01101001 |
| ! | 33 | 00100001 |
Reading a byte
Each position is worth double the one to its right:
| 128 | 64 | 32 | 16 | 8 | 4 | 2 | 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
64 + 8 = 72, which is the code for H.
Fun facts
- A byte has 8 bits and 256 possible values (0–255).
