About the Base32 to Hex

Convert RFC 4648 Base32 strings, such as TOTP/2FA secrets, to hexadecimal, or convert hex back to Base32.

Key features

  • Base32 → hex and hex → Base32 (RFC 4648 alphabet)
  • Spaces, dashes and = padding are ignored
  • Base32 input is case-insensitive
  • Several values at once, one per line
  • Clear message for invalid characters
  • Runs in your browser

Convert Base32 and hexadecimal

Base32 writes bytes using 32 easy-to-read characters (A–Z, 2–7), while hexadecimal uses 16 (0–9, a–f). Developers often need to move between the two, for example when a library or test document expresses a key in hex but an app displays it in Base32.

How Base32 works

  • Every 5 bits become one character (2⁵ = 32).
  • 5 bytes encode to exactly 8 characters.
  • = pads the last group to 8 characters.

Why Base32 is human-friendly

PropertyBenefit
No 0, 1, 8Can't be confused with O, I, B
Case-insensitiveTyping in lowercase still works
Only letters and digitsSafe in URLs and file names

Read bytes as text with Hex to String, or encode text with String to Hex.

How to use the Base32 to Hex

  1. Type or paste your text into the input box.
  2. Choose the options you want.
  3. The result updates instantly as you type.
  4. Copy the output or download it as a .txt file.

Frequently asked questions

What is Base32?

A way to write binary data using only the letters A–Z and digits 2–7. It's case-insensitive and avoids look-alike characters, so it's easy to type and read aloud.

Where is Base32 used?

Authenticator-app setup keys, some licence keys, Tor onion addresses and magnet links all use Base32.

Which alphabet is supported?

The standard RFC 4648 alphabet. Variants like Crockford Base32 and base32hex use different characters.

Is padding required?

No. Trailing = signs are optional on input and added on output.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. All text tools run locally in your browser.

Do these tools support Unicode?

Yes. They handle Unicode text, including emoji and accented characters.
