Examples

WordsResult
one thousand two hundred thirty-four1234
three million four hundred thousand and twelve3400012
minus forty-two-42
two point five2.5
nine hundred ninety-nine billion999000000000

How it reads a number

  1. Units and tens (one … nineteen, twenty … ninety) are added together.
  2. hundred multiplies the current group by 100.
  3. Scale words (thousand, million, …) close the current group and add it to the total.
  4. and, hyphens and commas are ignored.
  5. After point, each word is read as one decimal digit.

Where it helps

  • Checking contracts and checks: confirm that the words match the figures.
  • Cleaning transcripts: convert spoken amounts into digits for spreadsheets.
  • Digitizing forms where amounts were written by hand.
  • Teaching: let students self-check their answers.
