Syllables are estimated with a dictionary-free rule set, so counts can be off by one for unusual words. That's fine for comparing drafts.

How to improve your score

  1. Shorten sentences. Aim for an average of 15–20 words; split anything over 25.
  2. Choose short words. "Use" instead of "utilize", "help" instead of "facilitate".
  3. Prefer active voice. "We fixed the bug" is shorter and clearer than "The bug was fixed by us".
  4. Use lists for steps and options instead of long sentences.
  5. Cut filler words such as "very", "really" and "in order to".

Check length with the Word Counter, and find overused words with the Word Frequency Counter.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?

60–70 is plain English that most adults read easily, and it's a good target for websites, emails and general content. Many style guides aim for 60 or above; technical and academic writing often scores 30–50.

What does the grade level mean?

It estimates the US school grade needed to understand the text. Grade 8 means a typical 13–14-year-old could follow it. Many experts recommend grade 7–9 for public-facing writing.

Why do the formulas disagree?

Each uses different inputs: Flesch-Kincaid uses syllables, Coleman-Liau and ARI count letters, and Gunning Fog and SMOG count complex words. Looking at the average gives a balanced picture.

Does it work for languages other than English?

The formulas were designed for English. Scores for other languages aren't comparable, because word and syllable lengths differ.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. All text tools run locally in your browser.

Do these tools support Unicode?

Yes. They handle Unicode text, including emoji and accented characters.
