Slug best practices

  1. Use lowercase. Mixed-case URLs can be treated as different pages.
  2. Separate words with hyphens. It's the format search engines recommend.
  3. Keep it short. Drop stop words when the meaning stays clear: how-to-make-cold-brew-coffee → make-cold-brew-coffee.
  4. Include the main keyword people search for.
  5. Avoid dates in evergreen content, so the URL doesn't look outdated next year.
  6. Stick to ASCII letters, numbers and hyphens for maximum compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

The readable part of a URL that identifies a page, such as how-to-make-coffee in example.com/blog/how-to-make-coffee.

Hyphens or underscores?

Use hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators but joins words linked by underscores, so how-to-cook reads as three words while how_to_cook reads as one.

How long should a slug be?

Short and descriptive: usually 3–6 words, or under about 60 characters. Remove filler words like 'a', 'the' and 'of' when they don't add meaning.

Should I change slugs of published pages?

Avoid it. If you must, add a 301 redirect from the old URL so you keep search rankings and don't break links.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. All text tools run locally in your browser.

Do these tools support Unicode?

Yes. They handle Unicode text, including emoji and accented characters.
