Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

It varies by country. In the US, 15–20% at sit-down restaurants is standard. In much of Europe and Asia, service is often included and rounding up or 5–10% is common. In Japan, tipping is generally not expected.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. Enter whichever amount you prefer.

How do I quickly work out 20%?

Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a 64 bill: 6.40 × 2 = 12.80.

How does splitting work?

The bill plus the tip is divided evenly by the number of people. With rounding on, each share is rounded up to the next whole unit.

Are these calculators accurate?

They use standard, published formulas (for example the amortization formula for loans, Mifflin-St Jeor for calories and the U.S. Navy method for body fat) and are tested against known reference values. Results are estimates for planning, not professional advice.

Is my data stored?

No. All calculations run in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to a server.

Do the calculators work on my phone?

Yes. Every calculator is designed for mobile, tablet and desktop.
