Frequently asked questions

How much house can I afford?

A common guideline is the 28/36 rule: housing costs under 28% of gross monthly income and total debt payments under 36%. Lenders also consider your credit, savings and local rules.

How much should I put down?

20% is the traditional target and, in the US, usually avoids private mortgage insurance (PMI). Many loans allow less, but a smaller down payment means a larger loan and more interest.

Is a 15-year or 30-year mortgage better?

A 15-year loan has higher monthly payments but far less total interest, often at a lower rate. A 30-year loan gives a lower payment and more flexibility.

Does this include PMI?

No. If your down payment is under 20%, add your lender's PMI quote to the monthly total.

Are these calculators accurate?

They use standard, published formulas (for example the amortization formula for loans, Mifflin-St Jeor for calories and the U.S. Navy method for body fat) and are tested against known reference values. Results are estimates for planning, not professional advice.

Is my data stored?

No. All calculations run in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to a server.

Do the calculators work on my phone?

Yes. Every calculator is designed for mobile, tablet and desktop.
