Key features

  • Interest and total amount (I = P × R × T)
  • Time in years, months or days
  • Clear formula breakdown
  • Comparison with compound interest
  • Multiple currencies
  • Results update as you type

Simple interest made simple

Simple interest grows in a straight line: the same amount every year, based only on the original principal. It's easy to calculate and common in short-term loans and fixed-income products.

Formula

Interest I = P × R × T
Total A = P × (1 + R × T)

Worked example

5,000 at 6% for 3 years:

  • I = 5,000 × 0.06 × 3 = 900
  • A = 5,000 + 900 = 5,900

For 18 months: T = 1.5, so I = 5,000 × 0.06 × 1.5 = 450.

Simple vs compound interest

The gap widens dramatically over long periods.

Frequently asked questions

What is the simple interest formula?

I = P × R × T, where P is the principal, R is the annual rate as a decimal and T is the time in years. The total amount is A = P + I.

How is simple interest different from compound interest?

Simple interest is only ever calculated on the original principal. Compound interest also earns interest on previously earned interest, so it grows faster.

Where is simple interest used?

Some car loans, short-term personal loans, certificates of deposit, bonds (coupon payments) and many textbook problems.

How do I handle days?

Days are converted to years by dividing by 365. Some banks use 360 days (the 'banker's year'), which gives slightly more interest.

Are these calculators accurate?

They use standard, published formulas (for example the amortization formula for loans, Mifflin-St Jeor for calories and the U.S. Navy method for body fat) and are tested against known reference values. Results are estimates for planning, not professional advice.

Is my data stored?

No. All calculations run in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to a server.

Do the calculators work on my phone?

Yes. Every calculator is designed for mobile, tablet and desktop.
