Add or remove sales tax, VAT and GST
Whether you're a shopper checking a receipt or a freelancer writing an invoice, this calculator adds tax to a net price or extracts it from a gross price, using the correct reverse calculation.
Formulas
| Task | Formula |
|---|---|
| Tax amount (from net) | net × rate |
| Gross price | net × (1 + rate) |
| Net price (from gross) | gross ÷ (1 + rate) |
| Tax amount (from gross) | gross − gross ÷ (1 + rate) |
Common mistake: removing tax
A 120 price includes 20% VAT. Wrong: 120 − 20% = 96. Right: 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100, so the VAT is 20.
