Characters, bytes and code units

The same text can have different "lengths":

TextCharactersUTF-16 unitsUTF-8 bytes
hello555
café445
👋124
👋🏽148

Databases and APIs often limit bytes, while social platforms limit characters. Check which one applies.

Writing within a limit

  • Front-load key words: titles and previews are cut off at the end.
  • Replace phrases with shorter words: "in order to" → "to".
  • Watch for hidden Unicode: curly quotes and emoji can turn an SMS into a Unicode message.

Frequently asked questions

Do spaces count as characters?

Usually, yes. Most platforms, including X and Google, count spaces. The 'without spaces' number is useful for some school assignments and translation quotes.

How are emoji counted?

As one character each, the way you see them, even when an emoji like 👋🏽 is made of several Unicode code points. The UTF-16 units figure shows how JavaScript-based systems may count it.

Why does my SMS need two messages?

A single SMS holds 160 GSM-7 characters. Using any character outside that set, such as an emoji or a curly quote, switches the whole message to Unicode, which allows only 70 characters per message (67 per part when split).

Are the platform limits exact?

They're a close guide. X, for example, counts every link as 23 characters and some characters as two, so the final count on the platform may differ slightly.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. All text tools run locally in your browser.

Do these tools support Unicode?

Yes. They handle Unicode text, including emoji and accented characters.
