Frequently asked questions

Which ideal weight formula is best?

None is definitive. The formulas were developed decades ago, partly for medication dosing. The BMI-based healthy range is the most widely used guide, and the formulas give useful reference points within it.

Why do the formulas give different answers?

Each was derived from different data and assumptions. Robinson and Miller tend to give lower values for tall people; Hamwi and Devine increase faster with height.

Do the formulas work for short people?

They're designed for heights of 5 ft (152.4 cm) and above. Below that, rely on the BMI-based range.

Does frame size matter?

Yes. People with a larger frame or more muscle can be healthy above these values. Body fat and waist measurements add context.

Are these calculators accurate?

They use standard, published formulas (for example the amortization formula for loans, Mifflin-St Jeor for calories and the U.S. Navy method for body fat) and are tested against known reference values. Results are estimates for planning, not professional advice.

Is my data stored?

No. All calculations run in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to a server.

Do the calculators work on my phone?

Yes. Every calculator is designed for mobile, tablet and desktop.
