How fast do you type?
Test your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy. Choose a test length, start typing the passage and keep going until the timer runs out. Correct letters turn green and mistakes turn red, so you can see exactly where you slip up.
Typing speed benchmarks
| WPM | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 25 | Beginner |
| 25–40 | Fair |
| 40–60 | Average to good |
| 60–80 | Very good |
| 80–100 | Excellent |
| 100+ | Elite / competitive |
Many office jobs list 40–60 WPM as a requirement, and transcription or data-entry roles often ask for more.
How to type faster
- Use all ten fingers. Rest your index fingers on F and J (feel the bumps).
- Don't look at the keyboard. It feels slower at first but pays off quickly.
- Accuracy first. Fixing mistakes costs more time than typing slowly and correctly.
- Practice little and often. 10–15 minutes a day beats an hour once a week.
- Relax your hands and keep your wrists level.
Which test length should I choose?
- 15 seconds: a quick burst; results vary more.
- 1 minute: the most common benchmark.
- 2 minutes: a better measure of sustained speed and accuracy.
