Translate to and from Morse code

Morse code represents letters as sequences of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes). It's still used in amateur radio and aviation navigation beacons, and it's popular for puzzles, escape rooms, jewelry and tattoos. Type text or Morse and the translator detects the direction automatically.

Learning tips

  • Learn by sound, not by sight. Practice hearing "di-dah" rather than counting dots.
  • Start with E, T, A, N, I, M: the shortest codes.
  • Use the Koch method: start at full speed with two letters and add one at a time.

Spell things out by voice with the NATO Phonetic Alphabet, or encode puzzles with the Caesar Cipher.

Frequently asked questions

How are letters and words separated?

Letters are separated by a single space and words by a slash ( / ). When decoding, three or more spaces, | or / all count as word breaks.

What is SOS in Morse code?

··· −−− ··· (... --- ...). It's sent as one continuous signal, without the usual gaps between letters, and was chosen because it's easy to send and recognize, not because it stands for a phrase.

Does Morse code have lowercase letters?

No. Morse code has no case, so decoded text is shown in capitals.

What about accented letters?

Accents are removed before encoding (é → E). Some languages have extra Morse characters, but International Morse covers only the basic Latin letters.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. All text tools run locally in your browser.

Do these tools support Unicode?

Yes. They handle Unicode text, including emoji and accented characters.
