Frequently asked questions

How do you write 2026 in Roman numerals?

MMXXVI: MM (2000) + XX (20) + VI (6).

Why can't I convert 4,000 or 0?

Standard Roman numerals use at most three M's, so the largest is MMMCMXCIX (3,999). The Romans had no symbol for zero. Larger numbers used a bar over a numeral (×1,000), which isn't standard in plain text.

Why is IIII rejected?

In standard notation, a symbol isn't repeated more than three times; 4 is written IV. (Some clock faces use IIII for visual balance, but it's not the standard form.)

Why isn't 99 written IC?

Subtraction is only allowed in six pairs: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM. So 99 is XCIX (90 + 9).

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. All text tools run locally in your browser.
