About the Text Wrapper

Hard-wrap text at a chosen line width, such as 72 or 80 characters, without splitting words. Paragraphs can be re-flowed and long words optionally broken.

Key features

  • Wrap text at any line width (10–500 characters)
  • Never splits words unless you ask it to
  • Re-flow paragraphs that were already wrapped
  • Keeps blank lines between paragraphs
  • Optional hard break for very long words or URLs
  • Copy or download the result

Hard-wrap text at a fixed width

Some places expect text with real line breaks at a fixed width: Git commit messages, plain-text emails, code comments, README files, terminal output and fixed-width forms. The wrapper inserts line breaks between words so no line exceeds your chosen width.

Example (width 30)

Before:

Plain-text emails and commit messages are easier to read when lines are kept short.

Soft wrap vs hard wrap

  • Soft wrap is what editors do on screen: lines are displayed wrapped but the file has no line breaks.
  • Hard wrap (this tool) inserts real line breaks, so the text stays wrapped wherever you paste it.

Undo wrapping with Remove Line Breaks, split text into chunks with the Text Splitter, or count characters per line with the Character Counter.

How to use the Text Wrapper

  1. Type or paste your text into the input box.
  2. Choose the options you want.
  3. The result updates instantly as you type.
  4. Copy the output or download it as a .txt file.

Frequently asked questions

What width should I use?

72 characters is the convention for Git commit messages and plain-text email, 80 for code comments and terminals, and 60–75 is comfortable for reading prose.

What does 'Re-flow paragraphs' do?

It first joins the lines of each paragraph into one, then wraps them again. Use it to re-wrap text that was already broken at a different width. Turn it off to wrap each existing line separately (for lists and code).

What happens to words longer than the width?

By default they're kept whole on their own line. Tick 'Break long words' to split them at the width limit, which is useful for long URLs or hashes.

How do I unwrap text?

Use the Remove Line Breaks tool with 'Keep paragraphs' turned on.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. All text tools run locally in your browser.

Do these tools support Unicode?

Yes. They handle Unicode text, including emoji and accented characters.
