Put any text into a QR code

Not every QR code needs a website. A text QR code stores a message directly in the pattern, and scanning shows the text on the phone, even without an internet connection.

Tips

  1. Keep it short. The fewer characters, the bigger the dots and the easier the scan. Aim for under 300 characters.
  2. Need more text? Put it on a web page and use a URL QR Code instead.
  3. Consider the scanner. Some older camera apps show only the first part of long texts.
  4. Don't encode secrets. Anyone can read a QR code.

Frequently asked questions

How much text can a QR code hold?

In theory up to about 2,900 bytes at the lowest error correction, but practical, easily scanned codes hold a few hundred characters. The tool warns you when the data gets long.

Does the scanner need internet?

No. The text is stored in the code itself, so it works completely offline.

What do people see when they scan it?

Most camera apps show the text in a notification or preview, with options to copy or search it.

Is the text private?

Anyone who scans the code can read it. Don't encode passwords or confidential information in public places.

Do the QR codes expire?

No. They are static QR codes with the data encoded directly, so they work forever.

Can I use them commercially?

Yes. The QR codes you generate are yours to use anywhere, including in print.
