Convert PDF to an editable Word document

You received a PDF and need to change a few lines, reuse a paragraph, update a CV, or fill in an old form. Retyping is slow and error-prone. PDF to Word converts the PDF into a .docx file you can edit in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Apple Pages.

What converts well

PDF typeResult
Created from Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very good
Reports and letters with simple layouts⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very good
Multi-column magazines, complex designs⭐⭐ Text preserved, layout approximate
Scanned documents (images of text)❌ Needs OCR first
Password-protected PDFs❌ Remove protection first

Why the output may use text boxes

A PDF describes where every piece of text sits on a page, not how paragraphs flow. To keep the page looking like the original, the converter may place some text in positioned boxes. To get clean, flowing text for heavy editing:

  1. Open the .docx.
  2. Select all (Ctrl/Cmd+A) and copy.
  3. Paste into a new document as Keep Text Only, then reformat.

Editing tips

  • Small changes? Edit the converted document directly and save it as PDF again with Word to PDF.
  • Tables are recreated in most cases; check column widths.
  • Fonts missing on your computer are substituted by Word.

Privacy

PDF-to-Word conversion uses LibreOffice on our server. Files are processed in an isolated temporary folder and deleted immediately after the .docx is returned.

Need images rather than text? Use PDF to JPG. For slides, use PDF to PowerPoint. Remove pages you don't need first with Remove PDF Pages.

Frequently asked questions

Will a scanned PDF become editable?

No. Scanned PDFs contain pictures of text, not real text. They need OCR (optical character recognition) first; Word for Microsoft 365 and Google Drive can OCR PDFs.

Why does the layout look slightly different?

PDF positions every element precisely on a page, while Word flows text. The converter places content to match the original closely, so some paragraphs may use text boxes or have different line breaks.

How do I check if my PDF has real text?

Try selecting text in your PDF reader. If you can highlight individual words, it's text-based and will convert well.

Are my files kept?

No. They're processed in a temporary folder on our server and deleted immediately after conversion.

Do you add a watermark?

No. The output files are clean and have no watermark.

Are my PDFs stored?

Merge, split, extract and remove run in your browser. Word/PowerPoint conversions are processed on our server and deleted immediately afterwards.

Is there a page limit?

No hard limit. Very large files may take longer depending on your device.
